Stress Management Competencies

Evidence shows that managers play a key role in wellbeing at work, with the potential to either be a key cause of stress or to be a helpful resource to help people thrive. Through over 15 years of research, we have been working to identify the practical behaviours that managers can adopt to be a more positive influence and to successfully manage stress in the workplace.

The effectiveness of the behaviours have been tested in different industries and around the world, meaning we are confident that the behaviours are effective in different contexts.

From our intervention studies, we have also shown that the behaviours can also be developed through training and upward feedback, so by working with us, we can help your managers develop these behaviours.

The four clusters of behaviours and their components are shown below:

The Stress Management Competencies can be used in several ways:

  • Self assessment or 180 feedback reports - The stress management competencies can be used to generate 180 feedback reports, allowing managers to compare how others perceive their behaviour to their own self-perception. This can then be used to generate development and action plans.
  • Group or individual coaching – After generating feedback reports, we can follow up with managers individually or in groups to help them to reflect on their results and to set their own personal goals for the future.
  • Manager training – We can deliver bespoke or standardized training to groups of managers based on the competencies, using scenarios and interactive activities to bring them to life and build and consolidate skills.
  • Integration – The competencies can be mapped to and integrated with your existing competency frameworks / leadership training to provide a joined-up approach.
